I love speculative fiction. It gives me an opportunity to explore the way I experience feelings–through visualizing characters’ inner conflict as supernatural images.
For example: Ever been so sad that you feel a black hole in your chest? Ever felt so excited that you could feel wings on your body? That’s what I’m talking about.
I want my characters to win. Because if they can win their inner battles, so can I.
One of my favorite authors is Brandon Sanderson. I skim through battles but savor the inner turmoil of characters who face their trauma. Another of my favorites is Elizabeth Acevedo, who expertly weaves magical elements into characters’ stories and memories.
Outside of writing, I paint D&D minis, play video games with my kids, and sort of sing with my guitar.
